Botox is an injectable product approved by the FDA for reducing facial lines and wrinkles. It also has numerous medical purposes, from treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and incontinence to migraine prevention.
Botox contains botulinum toxin A, a natural substance that undergoes laboratory processing to ensure it’s safe. Botox works by preventing communication between the nerves in your face and the muscles that form frown lines and wrinkles.
It doesn’t deactivate facial movement completely because that would create an artificial, frozen appearance. Instead, Dr. Geracimos injects just enough Botox to stop lines from forming, smoothing the face while retaining a natural expression.
What areas can Botox treat?
Botox injections treat three primary areas:
Between the eyebrows
Vertical frown lines between the eyebrows are a common problem, often becoming deep, permanent furrows with age.
Forehead lines
The wavy horizontal lines that form on your forehead are another sign of aging that Botox controls.
Crow’s feet
Crow’s feet are the lines radiating from your eyes’ outer corners. They’re most obvious when you smile and laugh. Mild ones can be attractive, but deep crow’s feet make you look older than you are.
What happens when I have Botox injections?
Before you have any treatment, Dr. Geracimos will discuss the procedure with you and what you hope to achieve. She needs to ensure you understand what Botox can and can’t do for each patient so you have realistic expectations.
Dr. Geracimos also examines your skin, reviews your medical history, and asks about your current health. This is important because you shouldn’t have Botox in certain circumstances — for example, if you’re pregnant or have open cold sores.
The injections use tiny needles, so they cause minimal discomfort. You can also have your skin numbed beforehand if you don’t like needles. Dr. Geracimos marks the precise locations where she needs to inject Botox for the best results. The procedure typically only takes a few minutes, and you can carry on with your day as normal afterward.
What happens after Botox injections?
There may be some tenderness and slight swelling at the injection site after Botox treatment, but this soon disappears. You should see the results quickly, and they last around 3-4 months. You can maintain the effects long-term with three or four treatments a year.
Should you choose to stop having Botox, your lines and wrinkles will return to their previous state — they won’t look any worse than before you had your treatment.
